Flips: More Bloody Horowitz DSiWare Review

EA's "Flips" series is back for a fourth time, and followers of our past reviews know I've been a little harsh on this non-game digital book series -- but I'm about to change my tune here. My major complaint against Flips has been in the content being selected for release here in the States -- each of the first three downloads were full of Britain-focused material completely unfamiliar to American audiences. Here, though, is an author we know. "More Bloody Horowitz" contains three new short stories, each of them written exclusively for this DSiWare release by Anthony Horowitz. He's known best for the Alex Rider series of novels.

Mr. Horowitz is once again a British author, but at least EA's now picked a British author known in America -- the Alex Rider series has been going strong here in the States for a decade, and Anthony's going to have definite name recognition for any DSi-owning young adults who've previously delved into Alex's spy adventures. More Bloody Horowitz is more focused on light horror, on the level of something like R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series (the books I was reading as a 12-year-old), but fans should migrate here all the same.

Maybe the best change in EA's approach to its Flips brand here is in the price, though -- whereas the first three Flips e-books shipped into the DSi Shop for five bucks a pop, this one runs you only two. I think that's a much more appropriate asking amount for what you're getting here, as it's a lot easier to drop two dollars on a non-game than more than double that number.

Altogether, several excellent changes have come together to make this release, so far, the definitive installment in EA's still young Flips series. I'll be excited to see if the high points of this download set the bar for future releases -- having content that is relevant in America, having content that is exclusive to Flips and not published anywhere else, and charging just two bucks for the whole thing.
